US Darts Masters 2023 | Day Two Preview and Order of Play
The 2023 US Darts Masters draws to a close in New York on Saturday as the eight remaining hopefuls vie for the title at Madison Square Garden.
A dramatic opening night at the Hulu Theater saw six of the eight PDC stars safely progress, while two North American representatives upset the odds.
Day Two plays host to the Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and final in one unmissable session as the last eight compete for the £20,000 top prize.
Last year’s beaten finalist Michael van Gerwen has been installed as favourite to claim the crown for the second time and will take on rank outsider Jim Long in the Quarter-Finals.
Little over a week after landing a record-breaking seventh Premier League title, Van Gerwen returned to action in the Big Apple to defeat Canadian debutant Jake Macmillan 6-2.
Van Gerwen is the record 17-time World Series event winner and was US Masters champion when the event was held in Las Vegas in 2017.
Canadian ace Long pulled off the biggest win of his career on Friday and one of the biggest upsets in World Series history by dumping out defending champion Michael Smith 6-2.
The 55-year-old will now look to make life equally difficult for the three-time World Champion over the extended format.
Meanwhile, Gerwyn Price continues his quest to reach a fifth consecutive World Series final when he faces world number six Luke Humphries.
Price was beaten in the final of the Premier League last Thursday and has reached the final in five of his last six World Series appearances, winning two.
The Welshman safely saw off fellow Tour Card holder Jules van Dongen 6-2 with a blistering 105.6 average in Round One and will be looking to pick up from where he left off.
Luke Humphries, four times a Euro Tour runner-up this season, marked his US Masters debut with a 6-2 success over Alex Spellman, but averaged 20 points less than Price in doing so.
Two former World Series event winners go head-to-head as Rob Cross takes on Dimitri van den Bergh.
Cross, the 2018 Brisbane Masters champion, claimed his first European Tour title in Sindelfingen last Sunday and opened up his campaign in New York with a 6-2 win over Jason Brandon despite averaging just 82.5.
Van den Bergh, one of only eight players to have won multiple World Series titles, also overcame American opposition in Round One, dispatching JT Davis by the same scoreline.
Nathan Aspinall, the 2019 US Masters champion, looks to deny Canadian star Jeff Smith a place in the Semi-Finals, having already seen off Smith’s World Cup team-mate Matt Campbell.
Aspinall picked up his sole World Series title in Vegas four years ago and has enjoyed a strong season so far, narrowly missing out on a place in the Premier League play-offs and reaching a European Tour final.
Former Lakeside finalist Smith enjoyed a memorable 6-2 scalp of a struggling Peter Wright in Round One and is aiming to end a four-match losing run against The Asp.
The action gets under way from 7pm local time (12am BST), with Quarter-Final matches to be contested over the best of 11 legs, Semi-Finals best of 13 and the final best of 15.
