Premier League Darts 2023 | Night 15 Sheffield Preview and Order of Play
Premier League Darts heads to the Utilita Arena in Sheffield on Thursday for the penultimate night of league fixtures.
Just two weeks of action remain before the top four in the league table will head to London’s O2 Arena to compete for the sport’s most prestigious invitational title.
Three players have now officially secured their place in the play-offs, leaving three to battle it out for the right to join them.
Jonny Clayton occupies that all-important fourth position heading into Night 15, but only by virtue of having won more weekly titles than Nathan Aspinall.
Aspinall is involved in the opening match of the night as he takes on league leader Gerwyn Price in a crucial encounter.
The 2020 Premier League runner-up dropped out of the top four following a 6-3 defeat to Michael Smith in last week’s Quarter-Finals, averaging just 88.5 in the process.
The Asp notably defeated Price in the final to claim the Night 12 title in Rotterdam before ‘The Ice Man’ gained his revenge in the Semi-Finals in Leeds the following week.
Price holds a two-point lead over rival Michael van Gerwen at the top of the table, having picked up four weekly titles to book his place in the play-offs for the first time.
The former World Champion was thrashed 6-2 by Van Gerwen in Manchester last week despite an average of 104.4 – marking his first Quarter-Final exit since Night Six.
Reigning champion Van Gerwen could reclaim top spot going into the final week of regular fixtures, but faces a formidable opener against World Champion Michael Smith.
The Dutch superstar has not won a weekly title since Night Six in Liverpool and will be out to avenge his 6-4 defeat to Smith in last week’s Semi-Finals.
Smith heads to South Yorkshire in the midst of a six-game unbeaten run which has led him to back-to-back weekly titles and assured him of a place on Finals Night for the first time since 2018 – when he finished runner-up to Van Gerwen.
As it stands, Van Gerwen and Smith would be due to meet again in the Semi-Finals at The O2 unless they can avoid finishing second and third respectively.
Clayton, the 2021 Premier League champion, looks to keep his play-off destiny in his own hands by bettering the run of Aspinall, and the Welshman starts out against the eliminated Dimitri van den Bergh.
Clayton finished runner-up in Manchester last time out to climb back in to the top four and now comes up against Van den Bergh for only the third time this season – with the pair having shared a win apiece so far.
Van den Bergh, who defeated Clayton in the Quarter-Finals of the World Championship on New Year’s Day, has suffered six Quarter-Final defeat in the last seven weeks, ending his hopes of making the play-offs.
The Belgian is one of only two players in this year’s line-up yet to claim a weekly title and will be determined to end the campaign on a high by doing so.
Chris Dobey still harbours faint hopes of gate-crashing Finals Night but must win the two remaining league nights if he is to have any chance of doing so.
The Masters champion is ten points adrift of fourth spot after registering just one win in his last six outings – that coming in Manchester last Thursday against Van den Bergh.
Dobey takes on the eliminated Peter Wright – who remains rooted to the foot of the table on nine points after a miserable campaign.
Wright, who has won just five matches in the entire tournament, will be determined to avoid finishing bottom of the pile and build up a head of steam ahead of the upcoming World Cup of Darts and World Matchplay.
Night 15 of 2023 Premier League Darts gets under way in Sheffield from 7pm BST, with all matches to be contested over the best of 11 legs.
