World Series of Darts Finals 2022 | Day One Preview and Order of Play

The 2022 World Series of Darts Finals get under way in Amsterdam on Friday as the invited players and qualifiers collide.

The World Series Finals features 24 leading players competing over three days of action at the AFAS Live, including the top eight from the World Series Order of Merit, eight invited players and a further eight Tour Card holder qualifiers.

The top eight in the World Series Order of Merit are seeded through to the Second Round on Saturday, while the other 16 players will start out in Round One on opening night.

Having missed the trio of World Series events in Australia and New Zealand, reigning World Champion Peter Wright is among the invited contingent, and starts out against Women’s World Matchplay champion Fallon Sherrock.

Wright, World Series Finals runner-up in 2015 and 2016, warmed up for this event in style by picking up a first European Tour title in five year at the German Open last weekend.

The world number two is now eyeing a first televised triumph since securing his second world title at Alexandra Palace in January, but faces a tricky opener against the Women’s Series star.

Sherrock has featured in all six World Series events this season, winning two matches, and will look to make it third time lucky against ‘Snakebite’, having been beaten 5-1 in the Group Stage of last year’s Grand Slam before narrowly going down 16-13 in an epic Quarter-Final later in the event.

Meanwhile, Dutch star Dirk van Duijvenbode looks to delight his home crowd by overcoming New Zealand’s Haupai Puha.

Van Duijvenbode has picked up two Players Championship events this season and was a quarter-finalist at the World Matchplay, while Puha notably defeated Jonny Clayton in the Queensland Darts Masters before losing out to Michael van Gerwen.

Danny Noppert, Van Duijvenbode’s World Cup team-mate earlier this summer, opens up with a tie against World Cup winner Simon Whitlock.

Noppert has enjoyed a sensational season which has seen him land a first major title at the UK Open, as well as a ProTour title and a Semi-Final run at the World Matchplay.

Australia’s Whitlock ended a ten-year wait for a televised title at the World Cup alongside Damon Heta, and he recently recorded a sixth consecutive win over MVG at the Hungarian Darts Trophy.

An all-Aussie show-down sees world number 19 Heta come up against fellow Tour Card Holder Gordon Mathers – who received the inaugural Kyle Anderson Trophy last month as the most successful Oceanic player in this year’s World Series.

Crowd favourite Vincent van der Voort is also set for a hero’s homecoming when he steps up to face Canadian star Matt Campbell.

Van der Voort is making his third consecutive appearance in the event, having defeated Joe Cullen and Nathan Aspinall in 2020 and 2021 respectively, while debutant Campbell also came through the Tour Card Holder qualifier and has reached a ProTour final in his first season on the tour.

Reigning North American champion Leonard Gates, who featured in the US Open in New York and has qualified for this year’s World Championship, takes on South African star Devon Petersen – bidding to recapture the form which led him to a European Tour title in 2020.

World number 16 Dave Chisnall, twice a semi-finalist in this event, kicks off with a clash against former Czech Open champion Jamie Hughes in what promises to be a masterclass in power scoring.

Danny Baggish, winner of two CDC events this year to ensure a return to Ally Pally in December, looks to continue his resurgence in form when he meets former ProTour event winner and World Championship quarter-finalist Ryan Joyce.

The action gets under way from 6pm BST, with First Round matches to be contested over the best of 11 legs.
