Grand Slam of Darts 2021 Day Two | Evening Session preview and order of play
The Group Stage action continues at the 2021 Grand Slam of Darts on Sunday evening with the second set of fixtures from Groups E-H.
A potentially pivotal session in the race for knock-out qualification sees Saturday’s winners collide, while the losers from Day One also face off.
Michael van Gerwen got his quest for a fourth Grand Slam title off to the perfect start by whitewashing Lisa Ashton 5-0 on Saturday, registering the highest winning average (105.8) in the process.
The world number three, who secured his first ranking title of the year at the recent Super Series, now comes up against fellow top 16 star Joe Cullen in a repeat of their epic encounter at last year’s World Championship.
Cullen, a winner of two Players Championship titles this season, also made a perfect start at the Aldersley Leisure Village by thrashing John Henderson 5-0 with a 98.8 average.
Cullen is making only his second appearance at the Grand Slam and is vying to reach the knock-out phase for the first time.
Elsewhere in Group G, World Cup winner Henderson faces four-time Women’s World Champion Ashton in a must-win battle for both players.
Ashton has failed to make it out of the group in two previous attempts at the Grand Slam, while Henderson is making his return to the event for the first time since 2010.
Group H sees two-time World Champion Gary Anderson take on 2019 world finalist Michael Smith in arguably the stand-out tie of the evening.
Smith averaged 100.5 in edging past Raymond van Barneveld in a last-leg decider and boasts a consistent record at the Grand Slam, with three Quarter-Finals and a Semi-Final to his name since 2013.
Anderson punished a struggling Joe Davis on opening night to record a 5-1 victory but will be eyeing a marked improvement on his match average of 82.4.
Van Barneveld, the 2012 champion, looks to remain in contention for a place in the Last 16 by overcoming 2020 World Youth finalist Davis.
Crowd favourite Barney is making his first Grand Slam appearance since 2018, having come through last week’s Tour Card Holder qualifier, and will be keen to replicate the performance of last night which saw him average 96.5.
Davis has been suffering with Tennis Elbow in the build-up to the event and was visibly playing through the pain barrier, ending with an average of just 67.
World Matchplay champion Peter Wright aims to put one foot in the Second Round by overcoming German number one Gabriel Clemens.
Wright put a poor run of recent results behind him by defeating Fallon Sherrock 5-1 on Saturday night and will have revenge in his sights after his defeat to Clemens in last year’s World Championship.
Clemens, making his third consecutive Grand Slam appearance, thrashed Mike De Decker 5-1 in his opener and will be quietly confident of pulling off another televised scalp of Snakebite.
History-maker Sherrock returns to the stage to take on fellow debutant De Decker in a make-or-break fixture for both players.
The opening match of the night sees UK Open finalist Luke Humphries take on Canadian World Cup star Matt Campbell as both bid to register their first points.
Humphries averaged 101.5 in defeat to Mensur Suljovic, 18 points higher than Campbell – who was thrashed 5-1 by Jose de Sousa.
Reigning champion De Sousa looks to continue his love affair with this prestigious event by overcoming World Cup finalist Suljovic.
De Sousa, who claimed the title behind closed doors in Coventry 12 months ago, finished runner-up in this year’s Premier League and has racked up three ProTour titles in 2021.
Suljovic is making his first Grand Slam appearance since 2018 – when he reached the Semi-Finals – and has enjoyed a timely return to form in recent months after a brief sabbatical from the sport in summer.
The action gets under way from 7pm GMT, with group matches to be contested over the best of nine legs.
