Fairytale in New York for Michael Smith at the US Darts Masters

Michael Smith secured his second World Series title at the 2022 US Darts Masters courtesy of an 8-4 victory over Michael van Gerwen in the final in New York.

Shanghai Masters champion in 2018, Smith doubled his tally in style at the Hulu Theater inside Madison Square Garden, picking up the £20,000 top prize to continue his blistering winning streak.

Having won Night 16 of the Premier League and the Dutch Darts Championship, ‘Bully Boy’ made it three titles inside ten days and extended his unbeaten run to 12 matches.

Smith had opened the tournament on Friday with victory over American qualifier Doug Boehm, and began Saturday’s final stages with an 8-3 defeat of Gary Anderson in the Last Eight.

He then landed eight 180s in an 8-6 Semi-Final win over World Champion Peter Wright, before recovering from 3-1 and 4-3 down in the final to defeat Van Gerwen with the aid of five straight legs.

Van Gerwen had finished 130 in leg seven to restore his advantage, but Smith hit back with a 100 checkout, moved ahead with tops and then produced legs of 14, 14 and 12 darts to wrap up the title.

“I’ve won tournaments before but it’s unreal to win at Madison Square Garden,” said Smith. “Everyone wanted to win this event and it’s unreal for me to be that person.

“I’ve just won a tournament in the most iconic venue in the world, and I’m the first person to do it. I’m ecstatic.

“I wasn’t playing my best darts, but I put in a decent second half in the final. I did that earlier against Peter too and long may it continue.

“Michael’s the same, we’re capable of putting in four or five legs on the spin with no reply, and luckily I did.”

Smith had lost in the World Championship and UK Open finals earlier this year, but has since embarked on an emphatic winning run which also included back-to-back Players Championship titles.

“I’m playing well and picking up titles, and it’s unreal the way things have swung in my favour,” he added.

“Since I won the last night of the Premier League, my confidence has grown and grown. I wasn’t chasing results, I was chasing wins and I’ve just won the first ever tournament at Madison Square Garden.

“Now that I’m making finals each week and winning them – and the way I’m winning them – is massive for my confidence and self-belief.”

Van Gerwen followed up Friday’s First Round win over Jules van Dongen by seeing off James Wade 8-3 in the Quarter-Finals.

He then averaged 99.6 in an 8-4 Semi-Final defeat of Gerwyn Price, but was to be denied a second US Darts Masters title.

“Of course I want to win, but Michael played a really good game and you have to take your hat off and say congratulations,” said Van Gerwen.

“This is special but I can say that I didn’t win, Michael didn’t win – I think darts won tonight especially here in America.

“I think this is a massive step forward for the professionalisation of darts in general and the global sport of darts.”

Price had reached the Last Four with a narrow 8-7 win over Jonny Clayton in a gripping all-Welsh clash, while Wright was an 8-3 Quarter-Final winner over newly-crowned North American Champion Leonard Gates.

US Darts Masters 2022 | Day Two Preview and Order of Play

The 2022 US Darts Masters draws to a close in New York on Saturday as the final eight battle it out for glory at Madison Square Garden.

The opening World Series silverware of the season is up for grabs as seven PDC representatives and an American qualifier face off at the Hulu Theater.

Day One saw the big guns largely come through their opening matches unscathed, with the exception of Fallon Sherrock – who was out of sorts in a 6-2 defeat to Leonard Gates with an average of just 71.

Gates’ reward for that memorable victory is a Quarter-Final show-down with world number one and reigning World Champion Peter Wright.

Wright began his quest for a fourth World Series title with a 6-4 win over Tour Card holder Danny Baggish despite an average of just 90 and will be eyeing a marked improvement on that display.

The colourful Scot is aiming to bounce back at the first opportunity, having narrowly missed out on the Premier League play-offs just over a week ago.

The winner of that tie will face either two-time World Champion Gary Anderson or man of the moment Michael Smith in the Semi-Finals.

Smith secured his first weekly Premier League title at the 16th and final time of asking in Newcastle before going on to win the Dutch Darts Championship last weekend.

He continued that winning run by overcoming debutant qualifier Doug Boehm 6-4 with a 96 average on Friday and is looking to follow up his Shanghai Masters success back in 2018.

Anderson, a six-time World Series event winner including the US Masters in 2018, opened up with a 6-3 win over Matt Campbell, averaging 87 having used two different sets of darts.

The world number six finished rock bottom of this year’s Premier League table and was beaten by Smith in two of their three meetings in the event.

A familiar contest between two Welsh giants of the sport sees Grand Slam champion Gerwyn Price take on Premier League champion Jonny Clayton.

Clayton finished top of the Premier League table and has a chance to defend his title in Berlin later this month, but will firstly have his sights set on a second World Series title in five appearances.

The Ferret made light work of Danny Lauby Jr in Round One with a 6-2 victory and is now eyeing a fourth consecutive televised win over Price this year.

Former World Series Finals winner Price has picked up a European Tour title and a Players Championship title this season, but missed out on a place in the Premier League play-offs.

The world number two averted a potential banana skin against World Seniors Master David Cameron in Round One and now aims to stop the rot against his close compatriot.

The fourth Quarter-Final sees decorated duo Michael van Gerwen and James Wade go head-to-head for the eighth time this season.

Van Gerwen has already picked up three European Tour titles and two Players Championship titles this season and will be looking to continue his dominance of the World Series, having racked up 17 tournament wins since 2013.

The Dutch star, who will miss the upcoming World Cup of Darts due to an arm operation, fended off a late revival from Jules van Dongen to prevail 6-4 on Friday with a 96.24 average – the highest of the round.

Wade won three of his five meetings with MVG in this season’s Premier League and their latest encounter marks a dress rehearsal for their Semi-Final in Berlin next Monday.

The world number five was flawless on the outer ring in his First Round match against Jeff Smith, landing six from six on the doubles in a commanding 6-2 victory.

The action gets under way from 7pm EST (12am UK time), with all matches to be contested over the best of 15 legs.

Leonard Gates storms past Fallon Sherrock at the US Darts Masters

American ace Leonard Gates tore up the script with a dominant 6-2 win over Fallon Sherrock on the opening day of the 2022 US Darts Masters in New York.

The eagerly-awaited tournament in the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden began in style as home favourite Gates won through to Saturday’s final stages.

Sherrock sealed the opening leg but Gates reeled off four in a row to take command, and though the 2021 Nordic Masters finalist stopped the rot in leg six, it was the CDC star who closed out the win with finishes of 70 and 82.

“The energy was something I’ve never experienced here in North America before – it was great!” said Gates.

“It wasn’t her A-game but she’s done a lot of great things for darts and women’s darts, and I applaud her. She’s definitely the crowd favourite but I had to play my game.”

Gates will now face reigning World Champion and world number one Peter Wright – who held off a stern challenge from top-ranked American Danny Baggish before wrapping up a 6-4 victory.

Florida’s Baggish led 2-1 early on, but a 121 finish for a 12-darter from Wright in leg four sparked a run of three successive legs to put him in command.

“The crowd tonight was all behind USA and darts is the winner tonight – we’re lucky to be playing here in New York,” said Wright, who wore a specially-designed shirt themed on a New York taxi.

“I missed a few doubles here and there but I don’t think I had the right glasses on and I’ll have to try my normal ones tomorrow.

“I was a little bit rusty but I’ll brush up on that. I want to be the first one to win this tournament but there’s a long way to go yet.”

Former US Masters champion Gary Anderson began his bid to regain the title with a 6-3 win over Canada’s Matt Campbell – despite the Scot needing to play with borrowed darts.

Anderson now meets Michael Smith in the Last Eight on Saturday after the former Shanghai Masters winner overcame big-stage debutant Doug Boehm 6-3.

Michael van Gerwen, the 2017 champion, survived a scare on his way to clinching a 6-4 win over Dutch-born American Jules van Dongen.

Van Dongen hit back from 3-0 down to trail 4-3 with legs of 13, 12 and 14 darts, but paid for missing his chance to level in leg eight before Van Gerwen closed out the win.

“I’m happy to win,” said Van Gerwen. “I let him into the game but it’s the game of his life – his first time in front of his home crowd but I did the right thing at the end.”

Van Gerwen now meets James Wade in the Quarter-Finals, with the left-hander running out a 6-2 winner against Canadian number one Jeff Smith.

Gerwyn Price overcame a scare against newly-crowned World Seniors Master David Cameron before progressing with a 6-4 success.

Cameron hit back from 2-0 down to level with a 124 checkout and also wiped out a two-leg deficit to square the contest after eight legs – but he paid for missing a dart at tops to lead in the ninth before Price pounced to seal the win.

Price now faces an all-Welsh quarter-final with World Cup team-mate Jonny Clayton, who was a comfortable 6-2 winner against emerging American Danny Lauby.

The opening World Series event of the season will conclude on Saturday evening with the Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and final in the Hulu Theater.

In addition, Saturday’s afternoon session will feature the Bet365 North American Championship, as the eight US and Canadian stars battle for that title and a place in the 2022/23 World Darts Championship.

US Darts Masters 2022 | Day One Preview and Order of Play

The opening World Series event of the season commences in New York City on Friday with the First Round of the US Darts Masters.

A selection of the sport’s biggest names will battle it out at the iconic Madison Square Garden Hulu Theater from June 3-4, with eight PDC representatives joined by eight North American stars.

The PDC representatives will each take on a North American qualifier in Round One as they look to avoid a potential banana skin.

Michael van Gerwen, winner of the inaugural US Masters in Las Vegas five years ago, kicks off his campaign against PDC Tour Card holder Jules van Dongen.

Van Gerwen has already picked up three European Tour titles and two Players Championship titles this season and will be looking to continue his dominance of the World Series, having racked up 17 tournament wins since 2013.

Dutch-born Van Dongen, who is making his World Series debut, came through the European Qualifying School in January to earn his place on the tour and also featured in the recent WDF World Championship.

Gary Anderson, US Masters champion in 2018, faces a tough opening test against recent ProTour event finalist Matt Campbell.

Anderson finished rock bottom of this year’s Premier League table, and the two-time World Champion will be determined to bounce back on the televised stage at the first time of asking.

Canadian ace Campbell, who will feature in the World Cup of Darts later this month, was runner-up to reigning US Masters champion Nathan Aspinall in Players Championship 13 in April, defeating the likes of Danny Noppert and Krzysztof Ratajski along the way.

World number one Peter Wright launches his quest for a fourth World Series title with a clash against PDC Tour Card holder Danny Baggish.

Wright, who narrowly missed out on the Premier League play-offs a week ago, last won a ranking tournament in February but has shown signs of a return to form with yet another new setup in recent weeks.

Baggish came through Qualifying School in dramatic fashion last year but has struggled to make inroads during his time on the tour so far, though he did recently register his first win on the European Tour and won the North American Championship in 2019.

The opening match of the tournament sees man of the moment Michael Smith take on debutant qualifier Doug Boehm.

Smith secured his first weekly Premier League title at the 16th and final time of asking in Newcastle last Thursday before going on to win the Dutch Darts Championship at the weekend.

Shanghai Masters champion in 2018, ‘Bully Boy’ knows what it takes to win a World Series event and heads to The Big Apple in fine form and full of confidence.

Boehm is the top CDC Order of Merit qualifier and will look to make it a memorable first appearance on a televised stage.

Meanwhile, ‘Queen of The Palace’ Fallon Sherrock aims to shine on jubilee weekend as she takes on CDC qualifier and recent WDF World Championship participant Leonard Gates.

Sherrock rose to stardom courtesy of her run to the Last 32 of the 2020 World Championship, before reaffirming her credentials by reaching last year’s Nordic Masters final, followed by a run to the Quarter-Finals of the Grand Slam of Darts.

Sherrock makes her World Series return (Photo by PDC)

Gates posted a sensational 113.24 average at this year’s Q School and will look to register his first win in the World Series, having been whitewashed 6-0 by Rob Cross in the 2019 US Masters.

World number two Gerwyn Price, a former World Series Finals champion, kicks off with a tie against recent World Seniors Masters champion David Cameron.

Grand Slam champion Price has picked up a European Tour title and a Players Championship title this season, but missed out on a place in the Premier League play-offs.

Canada’s Cameron defeated the likes of Kevin Painter, Robert Thornton and Phil Taylor en route to his first televised title at Lakeside last weekend and will look to pick up from where he left off as he eyes another big name scalp.

Premier League champion Jonny Clayton, the reigning World Series Finals winner, is faced with a tricky opener against American left-hander Danny Lauby Jr.

Clayton finished top of the Premier League table and has a chance to defend his title in Berlin later this month, but will firstly have his sights set on a second World Series title in five appearances.

Lauby, the CDC Order of Merit number two, has featured in successive PDC World Championships and has narrowly lost out 3-2 on both occasions, going down to Ryan Searle and William O’Connor.

James Wade, whose maiden World Series title came at the World Series Finals in 2018, starts his latest campaign against Tour Card holder Jeff Smith.

Wade secured a place in the Premier League play-offs with a third place finish and will be out to recapture his sparkling mid-season form after a recent illness setback.

Smith, the 2016 Lakeside runner-up and former World Cup quarter-finalist, is no stranger to the PDC World Series and is making his third consecutive US Masters appearance as he bids for his first win.

The action gets under way from 7pm EST (12am UK time), with First Round matches to be contested over the best of 11 legs.
