Richard Veenstra sets new record Lakeside average at the WDF World Championship

Richard Veenstra set a new record average at Lakeside on his way a straight sets demolition of Luke Littler to reach the Quarter-Finals of the 2022 WDF World Championship.

Veenstra averaged 104.91 in a clinical display, eclipsing the record set by his fellow Dutchman Raymond van Barneveld (103.83) back in 2004.

The number nine seed dropped just` one leg as he crushed the hopes of 15-year-old sensation Littler – who had seen off Ben Hazel in a fifth set decider earlier in the week.

Veenstra, a semi-finalist in the BDO World Championship at Lakeside in 2016, secured four legs in 12 darts or fewer and sealed victory in style with a 121 checkout.

He will now face Belgium’s Brian Raman in the Quarter-Finals after the number one seed dismantled Jarred Cole in straight sets.

PDC Tour Card holder Raman averaged 97.5 as he coasted to victory for the loss of only two legs, landing a trio of 13-darters along the way.

Elsewhere, Australian star Tori Kewish whitewashed number one seed Deta Hedman to reach the Quarter-Finals of the women’s competition.

Hedman’s 15 missed darts at doubles all came in the same leg as Kewish pulled off a dominant victory with high checkouts of 80 and 120.

Wayne Warren, the 2020 BDO World Champion, completed an impressive comeback from two sets down to deny Lee Shewan in a decider.

The veteran Welshman reeled off eight of the last nine legs to book his place in the Last 16 with an average of 94.7.

Tenth seed Scott Marsh also progressed to the Last 16 courtesy of a narrow 3-2 win over former PDC Tour Card holder James Richardson.

Richardson took the opening set from two legs down bit only for Marsh to claim the second set in a decider and pull off a clean sweep in the third to hit the front.

Richardson sealed the fourth set 3-1 to send it the distance, but it was Marsh who held firm with a 14-darter to clinch victory.

He will now face Belgium’s Andy Baetens in the Third Round on Thursday after the number seven seed knocked out Dave Parletti 3-1 with a solid 92.3 average.

Number two seed Thibault Tricole came through a dramatic sudden death leg to edge out Canada’s Shawn Burt 3-2.

Burt, who knocked out pre-tournament favourite Connor Scutt in Round One, was left to rue three missed match darts in the final leg as France’s Tricole took out 74 to squeeze over the line.

Former PDC professional Steve Hine enjoyed a dominant straight sets victory over America’s Leonard Gates to continue his impressive Lakeside debut.

Lorraine Winstanley, the 2019 women’s world finalist, safely saw off Sweden’s Vicky Pruim in straight sets to move through to the Last Eight.
