Price battles back to claim Players Championship 21 title

Gerwyn Price produced a sensational comeback from 6-2 down to defeat Damon Heta 8-7 and seal the Players Championship 21 title in Barnsley.

The world number one dug deep to deny Heta a second PDC ranking title in a high quality final, averaging 107.8 as he clinched his 20th PDC tournament win.

Price averaged above 100 in five of his seven victories throughout the day at the Barnsley Metrodome as he ended a five-month wait for a ranking title.

The reigning World Champion set his stall out with a 104 average in a 6-3 win over William O’Connor and replicated that standard in thrashing Germany’s Lukas Wenig 6-1.

Price then averaged 106 in seeing off Martin Schindler 6-4 before overcoming Luke Humphries 6-2 in the Last 16 with his lowest average of the day (93.3).

Callan Rydz was left to rue one missed match dart in the Quarter-Finals as Price came from 5-2 down to snatch a 6-5 victory before powering past Ian White 7-3 with a staggering 112.5 average in the Last Four.

It was Heta who made all the early running in the final as he raced into a 4-0 lead with an 89 checkout on the bullseye along the way.

Price got off the mark in leg five, but Heta maintained a healthy four-leg cushion until 6-2 before Price launched his fightback.

The Welshman secured back-to-back legs before firing in a 144 checkout to trail by one, but one missed dart at tops in the following leg allowed Heta to move one away from the winning line at 7-5.

An 11-darter on double ten followed by a 92 checkout in leg 14 saw Price force a decider, and he took advantage on throw with a maximum before landing tops for a 13-darter to seal the deal.

“It was frustrating early on, I missed a couple of doubles, I was kicking myself,” admitted Price.

“It was a new set of darts for me today which is a bit unusual, but I played well most of the day.

“I knew if I hit my A game I could get back into it, it’s just frustrating when you know how well you can play or have been playing and it just deserts you a bit.

“At 4-0 down, I never gave up, I knew if I get it back so that it’s level game then I’ll put him under it, and I did.

“Everyone wants to win tournaments, it took some good performances to beat me – that’s the standard of darts thesedays – but I’m back in the winner’s circle and it takes something special to beat me or someone just going really slow.”

Heta was appearing in his fourth Players Championship final and enjoyed impressive wins over the likes of Scott Waites, Max Hopp, Ritchie Edhouse and Krzysztof Ratajski.

White produced a resurgent run to his first ProTour Semi-Final since February, while Welsh ace Lewis Williams reached his first PDC Quarter-Final.

The 19-year-old defeated his regular practice partner Nathan Aspinall in Round Two and also dispatched Grand Slam champion Jose De Sousa along the way.

Michael van Gerwen’s wait for a first title of the season goes on after he went down 6-5 to Daryl Gurney in the Last 32 despite an incredible 112.5 average.

Gurney was then denied by the same scoreline by Rob Cross in the Last 16 with a losing average of 105.2.

World Matchplay champion Peter Wright saw his winning run ended by James Wilson in the Second Round despite an average of 107.

The highest average of the day went to Keegan Brown as he registered a magnificent 115.24 in his 6-2 win over Dirk van Duijvenbode in the opening round.

The 128-player field returns to action on Tuesday for Players Championship 22 from midday UK time.

Wright denies Van Gerwen to claim Players Championship 20 title

Peter Wright extended Michael van Gerwen’s wait for a first title of 2021 with an 8-2 rout to claim glory at Players Championship 20.

Wright had ended the year’s second and fourth blocks of PDC Super Series action with titles in recent months and repeated the feat in Coventry as he landed another £10,000 top prize.

The world number two registered four ton-plus averages in his seven wins on the day but reserved his best performance for the final in a high-quality contest with rival Van Gerwen.

Finishes of 84, 74 and 64 helped Wright into a 3-0 lead, with Van Gerwen needing a 130 finish for a 12-darter to hit back in leg four.

Wright punished a miss at the bull from the Dutchman to restore his cushion with a 12-darter in leg five, with Van Gerwen opening the next with seven perfect darts only to see his rival finish 324 in six darts with a 180 and a 144 checkout.

Double 16 saw Van Gerwen claim a second leg, but Wright took out 87 for a 12-darter, double 11 to capitalise on two further misses from the three-time World Champion and a 71 finish to complete a brilliant display – ending with an average of almost 109.

Wright also defeated Boris Krcmar, Steve Brown, Martijn Kleermaker, Daryl Gurney, Danny Noppert and James Wade during the day, and heads into the Betfred World Matchplay full of confidence.

“Beating Michael means a lot and to beat the players I did on the way through is great,” said Wright.

“I had some loose darts and missed so many doubles as well against people, but it’s nice to win.”

Wright continued his tinker-man style by using a new gold-coated set of darts on his way to victory, and he is now targeting World Matchplay glory with the set-up.

“I only got the gold darts on Wednesday morning. I like these darts, they’re new and I love them – the way they look in the board as well.

“I feel like I want to play proper darts, I didn’t want to show too much before Blackpool. I can win it.”

Van Gerwen won through to his second Players Championship final of 2021 and averaged 113 in a victory over John Henderson as well as ton-plus averages in deciding-leg wins over Chris Dobey and Michael Smith.

He also defeated Adam Gawlas, Dave Chisnall and Jose de Sousa and averaged 106 in the final, but remains without a tournament win since last November’s Players Championship Finals.

While the previous three days had seen victories for players from outside the world’s top 16 – Stephen Bunting, Chris Dobey and Ross Smith – the sport’s top names stamped their authority on Thursday.

Reigning UK Open champion Wade and Grand Slam champion De Sousa reached the Semi-Finals, with World Champion Gerwyn Price among the quarter-finalists.

Dimitri Van den Bergh won through to the Last 16 before losing to De Sousa in another high-quality battle in the final ranking event before beginning his World Matchplay title defence in Blackpool.

Kim Huybrechts and Gabriel Clemens both land nine-darters, taking the total of perfect legs landed during PDC Super Series 5 to five across the four days.

Players Championship 20 was also the final tournament before the cut-off for Betfred World Matchplay qualification, with the 32-player field confirmed ahead of the tournament’s return to the iconic Winter Gardens.

Dobey claims first PDC ranking title at Players Championship 18

Chris Dobey secured his first PDC ranking title at Players Championship 18 in Coventry with a dramatic 8-7 victory over Jose De Sousa in the final.

Dobey, who had lost in four previous finals, survived eight missed match darts from De Sousa before getting over the line in a nail-biting decider.

The £10,000 top prize moves the Bedlington ace into the provisional qualification places for the Betfred World Matchplay, having started the week more than £8,000 adrift of the final spot.

“To finally get a title means the world,” said Dobey. “I’m happy with today – I’ve played solid all day.

“I’ve played in local competitions and last-leg deciders have been my game, and I’ve proven it today. I was down and out against Willie Borland, same against Stephen Bunting.

“I don’t think I’ve ever lost against Jose – I’ve got a great record.

“I’ve never been so nervous in my life going for those doubles [at the end of the final]. They weren’t far away but he missed doubles, he probably should have won but I’ve done it now.

“I’ve had the experience of being in finals before but I haven’t got over that winning line.

“I’ve said for a long time now that once I get that first one then hopefully I can get some more under my belt.”

Dobey dropped just two legs in wins over Jeff Smith and Luke Humphries – averaging over 105 in his opener – and had to come through a deciding leg against William Borland to reach the Last 16.

There, he defeated Premier League champion Jonny Clayton 6-3, before edging out Monday’s winner Stephen Bunting and Dutchman Maik Kuivenhoven 6-5 and 7-6 respectively with averages of 105.6 and 107.3.

Dobey raced into a 3-0 lead in the final in just 43 darts but De Sousa found his range as legs of 11, 11, 12 and 14 darts saw him level at four-all.

Dobey edged back in front on double ten, but the Grand Slam champion levelled again by finishing 96 and then produced a 12-darter to break throw and lead for the first time at 6-5.

Dobey replied with a maxumum and double two, but saw De Sousa move 7-6 up with a clinical 122 checkout to move to the brink of a fourth title of 2021.

However, the Portuguese star missed double 18 and three darts at double nine in the next leg as Dobey saved the game on double eight, before De Sousa saw a dart at the bull for a 170 finish in the decider also go begging.

Dobey then missed two match darts at tops, but De Sousa was off-target with three more attempts – this time at double 15 – to hand the Bedlington ace a reprieve, which he grabbed on tops.

De Sousa had come from 6-4 down in the Semi-Finals against Ryan Searle to claim the last three legs, surviving three missed match darts from the Englishman and taking out 152 and 107 to book his spot in the decider.

He also defeated Darius Labanauskas in a deciding leg, but dropped just a total of six legs in other wins over Mervyn King, Steve Lennon, Jelle Klaasen and Adam Gawlas.

Searle and Kuivenhoven were narrow Semi-Final losers, while King and Bunting were joined in the Quarter-Finals by Scott Mitchell and Croatia’s Boris Krcmar – who recorded a memorable win over World Champion Gerwyn Price along the way.

Players Championship 18 also featured the rare achievement of nine-dart finishes from both players in the same match as Danny Noppert and then Martin Atkins landed perfect legs in their Second Round tie – which Dutchman Noppert won 6-3.

Wednesday sees the 128-player field return for Players Championship 19 at the Coventry Building Society Arena from 12pm BST.

Bunting ends five-year title drought at Players Championship 17

Stephen Bunting secured his first PDC title since 2016 at Players Championship 17 in Coventry with an 8-4 win over Dimitri van den Bergh in the final.

Bunting, who began the day outside of the provisional qualification places for the Betfred World Matchplay, all but sealed his spot at the Winter Gardens by taking the £10,000 top prize.

The World Championship semi-finalist narrowly missed double 12 for a nine-dart finish in the final as he powered past reigning World Matchplay champion Van den Bergh.

“It’s an amazing feeling to be stood here as a winner again,” admitted Bunting.

“A lot of people know I was close to packing in a few years ago but since then I’ve worked so hard behind the scenes, I’ve put everything into this.

“Trying to qualify for the World Matchplay was my priority this week, so to come here and win the title on the first day is beyond my dreams.

“I know I’m playing well, but I do honestly believe there is a lot more in the locker and I can relax now knowing I’m going to Blackpool.”

Bunting began the week’s first Super Series 5 event with a 6-2 win over Martin Lukeman in Round One, before dispatching Sean Fisher 6-3 and Aaron Beeney 6-2.

The former Lakeside Champion then overcame Ritchie Edhouse 6-4 before averaging 103.8 in a 6-2 success over Raymond van Barneveld in the Quarter-Finals.

Bunting then denied world number one Gerwyn Price in the Semi-Finals with a 7-5 success, having lost to Price in the Last Four at Alexandra Palace in January.

The St Helens ace began the final strongly by establishing a three-leg cushion at 4-1 and 5-2.

He then narrowly missed double 12 for a nine-dart finish in leg eight, returning to hit double six for a ten-darter to stretch his lead.

Van den Bergh took leg nine before registering a ten-darter of his own to claw back to 6-4 behind, but Bunting got back on track in leg 11 and went on to clinch victory in the following leg with a 64 checkout.

Van den Bergh posted five ton-plus averages in his seven matches on Monday, the highest of which a 110.43 in a 6-1 rout of Keane Barry in the Last 32.

The Premier League star also defeated Peter Jacques, Josh Payne, Vincent van der Voort, Brendan Dolan and Jose De Sousa en route to the final.

Bunting has leapfrogged Madars Razma into the provisional World Matchplay field via the ProTour Order of Merit, with Jermaine Wattimena now occupying 16th spot.

Van Barneveld is now within £4,750 of Wattimena courtesy of a superb run to the Quarter-Finals which included a 115.73 average in his 6-1 rout of Justin Pipe in Round One.

Michael van Gerwen’s wait for a first title of the year goes on after he squandered a 5-2 lead in an eventual 6-5 defeat to Gerwyn Price in the Quarter-Finals despite an average of 109.

Tuesday sees the 124-player field return for Players Championship 18 at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
