Williams and Campbell secure PDC Tour Cards after topping Challenge Tour Order of Merit

Jim Williams and Matt Campbell secured two-year PDC Tour Cards after finishing top of the 2021 Challenge Tour Order of Merit in the UK and Europe respectively.

The 2021 PDC Challenge Tour concluded in Milton Keynes and Niedernhausen on Sunday, with Williams and Campbell coming out on top following Event 12.

Both players will receive two-year Tour Cards as of next season and also qualify for this year’s Grand Slam of Darts and William Hill World Darts Championship.

Former BDO world finalist Williams edged a tight race to top the UK Challenge Tour Order of Merit, with all 12 titles having been shared between as many different players.

The Welshman finished just £100 clear of Scotland’s Shaun McDonald and will join the PDC circuit full-time from 2022-23, having previously narrowly missed out on a Tour Card at Qualifying School.

In contrast, Canadian ace Campbell was a clear winner of the European Order of Merit, racking up £6,800 in prize money, £1,700 ahead of nearest challenger Steven Noster.

Campbell, who partnered Jeff Smith to the Quarter-Finals of the World Cup of Darts in 2020, claimed the Event 11 title on Sunday with a 5-0 whitewash of Wesley Plaisier in the final.

Sunday’s victory was the third Challenge Tour title of 2021 for Campbell – who has also competed in the last two World Championships.

UK Challenge Tour Event 11 was won by James Richardson, while Cameron Menzies triumphed in Event 12.

European Event 12 in Niedernhausen was won by Dutch youngster Luc Peters – who defeated Kevin Blomme 5-4 in the final.

PDC Challenge Tour Order of Merit following Event Six

Jim Williams leads the way at the top of the UK Challenge Tour Order of Merit following the first six events of the season.

Former BDO world finalist Williams claimed the Event Two title in Milton Keynes on Friday and was a runner-up in Event Three the following day.

The Welshman then reached the Quarter-Finals of both Event Four and Event Six, racking up a total of £3,700 in prize money across the weekend.

Williams is £400 clear of Adam Smith-Neale in second, with the 2018 World Masters champion having won Event Four after finishing runner-up in Event Two.

Shaun McDonald occupies third spot courtesy of his victory in Event Five, while Darren Beveridge follows in fourth after winning Event One.

Canada’s Matt Campbell tops the European Challenge Tour Order of Merit and is more than £1,500 clear of Belgium’s Kenny Neyens going into the second batch of events.

The leading player from both the UK and European Challenge Tour Order of Merit will secure a PDC Tour Card for 2022/23 and a place in the 2021/22 World Darts Championship.

The UK Challenge Tour resumes in Milton Keynes for Events 7-12 from September 3-5, alongside the European Challenge Tour in Niedernhausen the same weekend.

Several players withdrawn on eventful final day of opening Challenge Tour weekend

A number of players were withdrawn from the final Challenge Tour event of the weekend in Milton Keynes on Sunday after coming into contact with a player who had tested positive for Covid-19.

Challenge Tour Event Six at the Marshall Arena saw 12 players pulled from their boards, in some cases midway through a match.

This came after an unnamed player returned a positive Covid test, meaning all players who had come into close contact with that player had to be removed from the event in accordance with government guidelines.

Their scheduled opponents were then handed walkovers into the next round.

Players forced to withdraw included Ayrshire’s Jim McEwan, who had claimed the Event Three title on Saturday, as well as Nathan Rafferty, Scott Marsh and Joe Davis.

Event Six was eventually won by Jamie Clarke, who defeated Ryan Palmer 5-3 in the final.

Earlier in the day, Challenge Tour Event Five was suspended for over an hour after a small electrical fire broke out in another part of the venue.

The venue was evacuated as fire crews attended the scene before play resumed to a finish, with Shaun McDonald defeating Nathan Girvan 5-4 to clinch the title.

Saturday saw Adam Smith-Neale join McEwan in the winner’s circle by claiming the Event Four title with a 5-1 rout of Gavin Carlin in the final.

The opening event of the series of Friday saw Darren Beveridge dispatch Martin Thomas 5-2 in the final to claim glory, before former BDO world finalist Jim Williams edged out Smith-Neale 5-4 in the final of Event Two.

Williams leads the way at the top of the Challenge Tour Order of Merit after racking up £3,700 in prize money, with Smith-Neale in second and McDonald in third.

The UK Challenge Tour resumes in Milton Keynes for Events 7-12 from September 3-5, as well as the European Challenge Tour in Niedernhausen the same weekend.

The leading player from both the UK and European Challenge Tour Order of Merit will secure a PDC Tour Card for 2022/23 and a place in the 2021/22 World Darts Championship.

David Evans and Ritchie Edhouse secure PDC Tour Cards via the Challenge Tour

David Evans and Ritchie Edhouse have secured two-year PDC Tour Cards after finishing in the top two of the final Challenge Tour Order of Merit.

A condensed Challenge Tour season concluded in Barnsley on Sunday as the race to finish in the top two went down to the wire.

Evans, a quarter-finalist in this year’s BDO World Championship, enjoyed a superb final weekend, winning a Challenge Tour event on both Friday and Saturday.

That saw him comfortably secure top spot in the Order of Merit to secure a coveted PDC Tour Card for the first time, as well as a debut spot in the 2020/21 World Championship.

Manchester’s Evans was the only player to win multiple Challenge Tour titles during the season, continuing the superb form he showed during the recent Modus Icons of Darts Live League.

Edhouse, who previously competed on the PDC circuit in 2017 and 2018, claimed Sunday’s Event Nine title before finishing runner-up in Event Ten to clinch second spot.

The Enfield ace finished just £100 ahead of Irish youngster Keane Barry, who had recently secured a Tour Card via the Development Tour, and £150 clear of Matthew Dennant.

The top eight players from the Challenge Tour Order of Merit will also qualify for the 2021 UK Open and include former BDO World Champion Scott Mitchell and this year’s BDO World Championship runner-up Jim Williams.
