Owen Bates dramatically seals World Championship spot and PDC Tour Card via Challenge Tour
Owen Bates snatched a place in the World Darts Championship and a PDC Tour Card at the expense of John Henderson as the 2023 PDC Challenge Tour drew to a dramatic close.
The race to reach Ally Pally and join the PDC ProTour went down to the wire in Wigan on Monday as Bates left it late to leapfrog Henderson into second spot on the Challenge Tour Order of Merit.
Former World Cup of Darts winner Henderson began the day in pole position to secure a return to the sport’s biggest stage, but only for Bates to inflict heartbreak on the popular Scot.
Bates, 20, enjoyed timely runs to back-to-back finals in Events 23 and 24 to finish just £175 ahead of Henderson and snatch second spot.
Bates, who claimed a first Challenge Tour title earlier in the year, will make his debut in December’s World Championship and joins Berry van Peer in securing a Tour Card for 2024 and 2025.
Van Peer will also make his World Championship debut after racking up four Challenge Tour titles this season to comfortably clinch top spot on the Order of Merit, and the Dutchman will also feature in next month’s Grand Slam of Darts.
Bates was denied in a deciding leg by Andy Boulton in Sunday’s Event 23 final and defeated Kurt Parry, Ian Jones, Ron Meulenkamp and Darren Armstrong to reach the Quarter-Finals of Event 24.
He then edged out Bates Peter Jacques in a last-leg shoot-out, before battling back from 4-1 down in a dramatic Semi-Final against Mike Warburton, surviving multiple match darts to seal his spot at Ally Pally.
Bates, however, was denied a crowning glory by James Hurrell – who claimed a 5-2 success in the final to seal a maiden PDC title.
