Michael van Gerwen branded Mervyn King’s conduct on stage as “bad for darts” following their Players Championship Finals meeting in Minehead on Sunday.
Van Gerwen battled his way to a 10-6 victory over King in the Quarter-Finals with an average of just 92 and was vocal in his criticism of the 53-year-old after the match.
King revealed he was suffering with sciatic nerve pain his lower back during his Last 16 win over Rob Cross on Saturday and was seen to be struggling again during a low-key encounter with the world number one.
Van Gerwen, however, insists he has little sympathy for the Bradwell thrower and says his complaints on stage proved a distraction.
“Mervyn didn’t want to make it a game,” Van Gerwen told ITV Sport.
“He was complaining about everything: the wind, the dartboards, he had a few darts that fell out but I had the same.
“Merv was the old Merv and people like that are bad for darts.
“Normally I don’t say that, but if you’re that injured with your back, why would you play?
“We’re all here to do a job and try to win with a good performance and when you keep making arguments and excuses, that’s what Mervyn is like, we all know that, it’s not nice and it doesn’t do the game any favours.
“People that know me know it puts me off because I don’t want to win games like this, it’s not good.
“It wasn’t really a battle, it was more a battle against myself, I was really annoyed and I’m still annoyed because I want nice games and if I lose I lose, if I win I win, not those silly excuses.
“You always learn, even in games like this, I need to keep in mind that I won the game but I want to do more and show what I’m capable of, but I don’t like games like this.”
Van Gerwen, who hit a nine-darter in his Second Round win over Adrian Lewis on Saturday, is vying for a fifth Players Championship Finals title and faces Ian White in the Semi-Finals this evening.
