Reigning World Champion Mikuru Suzuki will make her debut in the 2019/20 PDC World Championship after coming through the Women’s Rest of the World qualifying event on Saturday.
Suzuki, who became Asia’s first-ever World Darts Champion when she triumphed at Lakeside in January, continued her fairy-tale year by winning through the 38-player field in Hildesheim, Germany.
Suzuki followed up her impressive debut in the Grand Slam earlier the week with a series of commanding displays at the qualifiers, culminating in a 6-3 win over fellow Japanese star Kasumi Sato in the final.
The 37-year-old will join her compatriots Seigo Asada and Yuki Yamada in the sport’s show-piece at Alexandra Palace from December 13 to January 1.
Suzuki’s qualification ensures both the reigning Men’s World Champions and the Women’s World Champion will feature in a PDC World Championship for the first time.
Suzuki dropped just five legs en route to the Semi-Finals before thrashing Australia’s Corrine Hammond 6-1 and overcoming recent World Masters qualifier Sato 6-3 with a 78.5 average.
She will now be placed into the First Round draw and is guaranteed a minimum of £7,500 in prize money.
The women’s UK & Ireland qualifier takes place in Wigan on Monday November 25 and will feature the likes of Lisa Ashton, Lorraine Winstanley and Fallon Sherrock.
