Price powers past Anderson (credit:Lawrence Lustig/PDC)
Gerwyn Price and Michael van Gerwen stamped their authority to claim crushing wins over Gary Anderson and Adrian Lewis respectively and set up a Semi-Final show-down at the 2019 Grand Slam.
Reigning champion Price continued his superb title defence at the Aldersley Leisure Village with a dominant 16-9 victory over Anderson in repeat outcome of last year’s final.
Their eagerly-anticipated rematch, however, failed to live up to billing, but it was Price who pressed home an early 5-0 lead to clinch victory with a solid 95 average and seven maximums.
“It was a poor performance from both of us,” admitted Price. “I don’t know if I was the better player, but I won.”
“I tried to keep my cool for as long as I could because I knew I had to focus but I’ve got a lot of energy in me and just had to let a little out at the end.
“Gary was edgy at the start and so was I, to be honest I was overwhelmed to be 5-0 up. At 8-2 up I felt more under pressure and I said to myself ‘right I need to win this now.”
Price punished nine missed darts at doubles in the opening five legs from Anderson to race clear before the Scot eventually got off the mark in the sixth.
Despite a change of darts from the two-time World Champion during the first interval, it was the Welshman who powered into an 8-2 lead before Anderson claimed four of the next five legs to threaten a fightback.
Price, though, seized upon more key missed doubles from his rival to stretch his lead to 11-6 and made it four legs from the last five to edge ever-closer to victory at 13-7.
Anderson finished 78 to close the gap but failed to make further inroads as Price went 14-8 in front and registered the first ton-plus checkout of the match – a 109 – to make it 15-9.
The defending champion then sealed the deal with a 70 checkout for a 14-darter to ensure there would be no dose of revenge for the Flying Scotsman.
Van Gerwen coasted into a fifth consecutive Boylesports Grand Slam Semi-Final courtesy of a 16-6 rout of fellow multiple World Champion Lewis.
Having defeated the Stoke ace 5-2 in the Group Stage earlier in the week, MVG was ruthless in completing the double as he fired in eleven 180s and averaged 103.
The world number one produced a show-piece 132 checkout to move 6-1 in front as he inflicted a major early blow on Lewis – who failed to replicate the form he had shown in his comeback win over James Wade.
Van Gerwen helped himself to four of the next five legs to make it 10-2 before Lewis briefly rallied with successive legs to break throw for the first time.
Lewis, however, missed a chance to make it three in a row as MVG went 11-4 ahead before adding a further three unanswered legs to leave Lewis going through the motions.
After Van Gerwen missed the bullseye for a 170 checkout, Lewis claimed his fifth leg, but only for the Dutchman to respond with double five to go to the hill.
Lewis converted double ten in the next leg but could only delay the inevitable as Van Gerwen hit an eleventh 180 and finished double 16 for a 13-darter and a dominant victory.
“I don’t see any danger in anyone, only myself,” said a bullish Van Gerwen. “I’m capable of destroying everyone.”
“The 8-2 at the second break was totally deserved and I think from then on it wasn’t a game anymore.
“He [Gerwyn Price] has been getting closer to me in some games but close isn’t good enough, it’s as simple as that.
“Every time when he’s had a chance, he bottled it and I hope he’s also going to bottle it tomorrow.
“I know of all the players left I have the most talent by a mile, so if I play well and don’t make any mistakes then I will be the champion, simple.”
