Simon Whitlock can win on Thursday
Simon Whitlock heads to Germany looking to defend his European Championship crown and he can get his defence underway with a win over Kim Huybrechts on Thursday.
Simon Whitlock has enjoyed yet another good season on the PDC Tour. He reached the World Championships quarter finals, played well in the Premier League and was a finalist at the European Open in Dusseldorf. The Wizard will now look to defend his European Championship crown this week in Muelheim, in a bid to ensure that he remains in the top 10 in the world and so is eligible for next season’s Premier League.
That’s easier said than done with so many great players, particularly Michael van Gerwen and Phil Taylor, playing unbelievable arrows. They, along with the rejuvenated James Wade and Adrian Lewis, will be the men to beat this week but Whitlock shouldn’t be under-estimated.
That is exactly what the bookmakers are doing in his opening match with Kim Huybrechts as, although Whitlock is favourite, the Australian should be far shorter than his current price of 4/5. He’s a cut above the young Belgian, who has been threatening a big breakthrough since reaching the quarter finals here two years ago. He’s never quite made the massive leap into the upper echelons of world darts though and it should be the case that he is once again outclassed by one of the more seasoned campaigners on Thursday.
offer odds of 4/5 on Whitlock beating Huybrechts and for the defending champion winning his first round match that looks far too good to turn down. It certainly ranks as the best bet on day one!
