James Wade made it back-to-back televised titles with a dramatic 11-10 victory over Michael Smith in the final to be crowned 2018 World Series Finals champion in Vienna.

Wade, who ended a four-year wait for a televised title at the Unibet European Championship last weekend, became only the fifth PDC player to clinch consecutive TV crowns after denying Smith in a thrilling climax.

Smith suffered heartbreak in the deciding leg as he squandered five match darts to claim only his second televised title and Wade seized his reprieve to continue his incredible winning run.

"I missed those darts at a double and I thought that was just deserts but he missed and I made the most of it," said Wade.

"Last week I had the biggest luck in the world and this week I've had the biggest luck in the world."

Wade began the day with a 10-5 victory over Jamie Lewis in the Quarter-Finals before thrashing Raymond van Barneveld 11-2 in the Semis.

The left-hander began the final in ruthless fashion, racing into a 3-0 lead with checkouts of 80 and 96 along the way, before Smith found his feet to peg back to 4-3 behind with the aid of a 140 checkout.

A 76 finish from Wade was countered by an 86 from Smith in leg nine before the St Helens ace took out 100 to get back on level terms.

Wade followed up with a 100 checkout of his own to regain the lead before converting double 18 to make it 7-5 but double six followed by a roof-raising 170 checkout saw Smith restore parity.

Wade edged back ahead courtesy of a tidy 112 finish, but only for Smith to level again before cleaning up 87 to go in front for the first time at 9-8.

World number six Wade hit back with consecutive legs to turn the tide once more but went on to bust 121 and miss two match darts in the next leg to allow Smith to force a decider.

Smith took control with a 180 but incredibly squandered five match darts, allowing Wade to pick out double 18 and snatch victory.

A shell-shocked Smith admitted: "James let me off to get back to ten-all, I couldn't believe my luck getting that chance but I bottled it.

"The better player won on the day. All that's in my head is that tops, I can't say anymore."

Smith had seen off Dave Chisnall 10-5 in the Last Eight before overcoming Gerwyn Price 11-8 in the Semi-Finals, averaging 100 and 98 respectively.

The afternoon session saw Raymond van Barneveld end Michael van Gerwen's three-year unbeaten record in this competition with a thrilling 10-8 triumph.

The five-time World Champion recovered from 6-3 down to stun his Dutch rival with eight 180s and 10/13 on the doubles but failed to replicate those heroics when returning to the stage in the evening.
