Mensur Suljovic added his name to the World Series roll of honour by defeating Dimitri van den Bergh 8-2 to claim the German Masters title in Gelsenkirchen on Friday.

The Austrian ace, whose first televised title came at last September's Unibet Champions League, doubled his tally reigning in the first World Series event of the season in front of a record crowd of 20,000.

Suljovic began his run to the final with a 6-2 victory over Robert Marijanovic in the afternoon session before edging out World Champion Rob Cross in a last-leg decider.

He then thrashed an out of sorts Peter Wright 8-2 with a 99.7 average in the Semi-Finals, finishing eight of his twelve attempts at doubles.

Suljovic immediately stamped his authority on the final, producing back-to-back ton plus checkouts (109 and 100) before Van den Bergh landed double four to halve the deficit.

Suljovic then took out 80 and converted double 16 to stretch his lead and went on to clean up 81 for an 11-darter and a 5-1 advantage.

Van den Bergh replied with double 16 to stop the rot but only for 'The Gentle' to register another 11-dart leg on double 14.

The Premier League star followed up by hitting double eight and sealed the deal with a 76 finish on his favourite double 14.

"It's a great feeling for me and I'm really happy," said Suljovic. "Dimitri is a brilliant player and it was a long day, but I did well.

"The crowd was brilliant and to win this tournament makes me so happy. People have been playing really well against me recently but I had a good feeling and it was a great day."

Van den Bergh enjoyed a memorable World Series debut, defeating two multiple World Champions on the way to his first senior televised final.

The reigning World Youth Champion got off to a flying start as he whitewashed Martin Schindler 6-0 with a 109.98 average.

He then pulled off one of the most notable wins of his career to date by thrashing Premier League champion Michael van Gerwen 8-3, punishing six costly missed darts at doubles from the Dutchman.

Van den Bergh proved that result was no flash in the pan as he repeated the dose on Gary Anderson in the Semi-Finals, holding his nerve to edge a last-leg decider despite averaging six points less than the Scot.

Despite falling short of a landmark first TV title, the Belgian admitted: "I'm a current World Youth Champion but playing at this point of a World Series event is unbelievable.

"Mensur is the winner but I've learned a lot."

The day began with the eight PDC invites each taking on a German qualifier and all eight seeded stars safely progressing, with Van Gerwen notably ending the hopes of home favourite Max Hopp with a 6-5 triumph.

Anderson defied seven 180s from World Series debutant Jamie Lewis as he edged a high quality Quarter-Final 8-6, while Peter Wright edged out Raymond van Barneveld in a dramatic decider after Barney had fought back from 6-2 down.
