The unprecedented decision to include nine new faces for one-off matches in the 2019 Premier League has got the darting world talking, with fans, players and pundits taking to social media to air their views.

With Gary Anderson having withdrawn from the competition on Monday due to a serious back injury, nine 'Contenders' have been drafted in to take his place.

Each Contender will each contest an exhibition-style match at a venue local to them, and though they cannot acquire points themselves, their opponents are still playing for points which affect both elimination and the race for the play-offs.

Among the Contenders are a trio of young players who impressed in the recent World Championship, as well as the reigning BDO World Champion and a clutch of other fans' favourites.

Hometown favourite Chris Dobey will feature on the opening night in Newcastle on February 7, before three-time Lakeside Champion Glen Durrant, now a PDC Tour Card holder, heads to Glasgow.

Irish star Steve Lennon is in action in Dublin, with Development Tour winner Luke Humphries starring in Exeter and 'Highlander' John Henderson taking to the stage in Aberdeen.

World Championship semi-finalist Nathan Aspinall heads to Nottingham, while German number one Max Hopp gets set to raise the roof in Berlin and Dimitri van den Bergh and Jeffrey de Zwaan feature in the two nights in Rotterdam.

The announcement, described as "revolutionary" by PDC Chairman Barry Hearn, caused a huge stir on social media, with a Live Darts poll suggesting almost 70 per cent of fans are against the decision.
