Four-time women’s World Champion Lisa Ashton says BDO selectors should ‘hang their heads’ after opting not to send a female representative to the Grand Slam of Darts.

The BDO confirmed their eight representatives on Wednesday for November's cross-code tournament, with the Lakeside Champion and runner-up joined by the World Masters champion and the next top five ranked players from the BDO rankings.

No women have been involved in the tournament since 2010 - when PDC Women's World Championship finalists Stacy Bromberg and Tricia Wright both received a spot.

Anastasia Dobromyslova and Francis Hoenselaar competed in the 2009 Grand Slam courtesy of their Women's World Championship wins in 2008 and 2009 respectively.

Ashton has dominated the women's game in recent years, claiming Lakeside glory in 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2018, while also securing a second World Masters title in Bridlington last weekend.

The 48-year-old, who competed on the PDC Challenge Tour last year, took to Facebook to blast the BDO's decision to overlook a female representative in the prestigious major.

The post from her Facebook page read: 'Well, Grand Slam! I must say well done to the players that got in, and to the BDO selectors you still have no confidence in putting a lady player into the competition and promote the ladies game.

'You need to hang your head in shame, you are supposed to take the game forward! As we have done for the ladies and still knock us down and we are supposed to make a new start for the BDO, when will it start then as the PDC have given us a go so rant over.'

Ashton will be among a number of women vying for one of two coveted places in this year's PDC World Championship via the UK qualifying event in Milton Keynes on November 25.

A number of pundits have shown their support for Ashton's statement on social media...

The Grand Slam takes place from November 10-18 at the Aldersley Leisure Village in Wolverhampton and will feature 32 players battling it out for £450,000 in prize money.
