Michael van Gerwen has finally put an end to the long-term speculation on social media - exactly why does he pull his socks up on stage?

The world number one is regularly seen bending over in between visits to the oche to pull his socks up, prompting fans to question whether this is a metaphorical superstition or whether his socks were simply slipping down.

Van Gerwen notably performed his trademark ritual when trailing Gerwyn Price 5-1 in last week's Unibet Premier League clash in Belfast and went on to rescue a 7-7 draw.

The Dutchman explained via his official YouTube channel: "I used to flick my hand with my watch and I used to crack my fingers.

"Pulling my socks up is just something I do - I don't know why.

"Sometimes it helps, so I can't really complain!

"Maybe it gets my focus on the dartboard for a second to re-concentrate and gets yourself going again.

"Maybe it helps, maybe not? I don't do it on purpose, I just want to do the thing I love - play darts at a high level."

Van Gerwen is aiming to finish top of the Premier League table for a seventh consecutive season and maintain his 100 per cent record of reaching the final in each staging.

There could, however, be a 'sock' on the cards with in-form Rob Cross currently topping the pile by a point after ten weeks of competition.
