Rob Cross insists he is now ready to go into “overdrive” to defend his World Championship title.

The Hastings battler has had a fortnight off and now knows it is time to find an extra gear as the business end of the year approaches.

Cross, 27, will bid to sharpen up his game at a specially-arranged SAP Frankfurt Darts Slam on September 18 against the likes of Raymond van Barneveld, Simon Whitlock, Michael Smith, Max Hopp and Mensur Suljovic.

"It's now about getting ready for the crucial end of the year," Cross told Live Darts. "It's pretty awesome that we've got the SAP Frankfurt Darts Slam coming up as well because I need to get as much competitive games in as I can.

"It's also brilliant to be in Germany. The crowds out there are just incredible.

"It's probably the biggest boom area in the sport right now and I can’t wait to get there. It's now time for me to go into overdrive."

First up though is Hildesheim, and the next installment of the European Tour which kicks off for him on Saturday.

Cross will be aiming to reach his first European Tour final since the season-ending European Championship in 2017.

He added: "I'm looking forward to it! European Tour events are really important, they helped me last year to develop and get the TV game going. It helps you, it lets you know where your performances are.

"I feel brilliant. I feel a lot better in myself. There won't be any excuses going into the back end of the year – I’m either going to be good enough or I’m not going to be.

"It's been busy – it’s been good, obviously, the win in Brisbane was fantastic for me. It's just nice to come back and spend some time with the family.

"Now, definitely, is the time to get ready. Everything builds up to the Worlds, but even before that you’ve got some illustrious TV tournaments.

"I’m really looking forward to it. I need some big performances now, to focus on my game and try to get myself back to near my best. Like I played in Brisbane, but I still feel I can do better."
