Price dismisses Van Gerwen ‘fear factor’ ahead of Premier League clash

Gerwyn Price insists he is “not afraid” of Michael van Gerwen as he bids to stop the rot against his nemesis and remain unbeaten in the 2019 Premier League.

Revitalised Welshman Price is protecting the only unbeaten record left in the competition having won two and drawn three of his opening five games.

However, the head-to-head record between the two players makes for ominous reading for 'The Ice Man' - who has lost all 13 of his previous meetings with MVG.

Van Gerwen heads into the clash having been knocked off the top of the table last week and is out to avoid going three games without a win in the Unibet Premier League for only the second time since 2013.

"Obviously Michael is the number one player in the world and the reigning World Champion, but I know I can give him a good run and I'm confident I can beat him," said Price.

"Every time in the past when I've played the likes of Michael I've thought 'can I do it?' but now I'm in a position where I know I can.

"I knew I needed to win last week against Mensur [Suljovic] ahead of this week's tough game against Michael and even though I wasn't at my best I managed to keep my good run going.

"I'm not afraid of him or anybody and I know if I play my a game I can beat him. You always know he's going to play well but if his 'A game' comes out then I'll have to bring my 'A+ game' out."

A back-to-back Players Championship event winner and UK Open semi-finalist this season, Price heads into his Nottingham show-down with the world number one in arguably his best ever form.

Having failed to register a win in his debut campaign last year, the Grand Slam champion has already taken a huge step towards avoiding successive eliminations and now has his sights set on a place at The O2 in May.

He added: "I said at the beginning of the Premier League that I needed to get off to a quick start.

"Last year I didn't and this year I have and it seems to make you relax and doesn't put the tension on you.

"I've picked up points from every game and I'm the only one unbeaten so hopefully more of the same this week.

"Last year I was down in the dumps and beating myself up, but this year I've thought 'bugger everything', go out and give it your best and don't let anyone drag you down.

"I've given up social media, which is probably the best thing I've ever done.

"I'm not going to go back that way and hopefully my game will keep going."
