Michael van Gerwen believes Gerwyn Price is yet to find his feet in the 2018 Premier League and is confident of extending his crushing head-to-head record over the Welshman.

Van Gerwen and Price collide in Nottingham on Thursday evening with MVG vying to go clear of Michael Smith at the top of the table.

The world number one has won all twelve of his previous meetings with Price, including a four sets to two triumph in a thrilling World Championship Last 16 clash in December.

Price enters the night bottom of the pile - two points adrift of safety - and Van Gerwen claims 'The Ice Man' has struggled to settle in to life as a Premier League player in his debut campaign.

"He hasn't done too well yet in this Premier League but I'm looking forward to playing him," Van Gerwen told Live Darts.

"He's a good player with a lot of character, one for the future, but he has to find his form and sometimes that takes time.

"I've got a great record against Gerwyn but I won't be taking anything for granted.

"Each win is important and I know I've not played my best recently so I've got to make sure I'm prepared for Gerwyn.

"I've had a few days' rest because I didn't play last weekend and I'm feeling good."

Price is yet to register a win in the Premier League so far, losing three and drawing two of his opening five matches.

The former UK Open finalist previously admitted he would be happy to take on the role of 'pantomime villain' in this competition, but Van Gerwen believes that role carries extra pressure.

He added: "Adrian Lewis has been in that position, he always had the crowd against him and it's difficult.

"It took Adrian three or four years to turn that around and it's not easy.

"People either love you or hate you - simple."

Van Gerwen, the reigning Unibet Premier League champion, has finished top of the table in all five of his previous appearances and insists nothing less than top spot again this year will suffice.

When asked if he fully expected to secure the £25,000 league winner's bonus, the Dutchman joked: "I think you know the answer!

"I'm always trying to get top of the table, I'm not playing my best game yet but there's still a long way to go.

"I feel good but I can do a lot better so we'll see what will happen."
