Van Gerwen: Anderson is my 'biggest threat' on Premier League Finals Night

Mighty Michael van Gerwen insists that Gary Anderson remains his “biggest threat” ahead of the Unibet Premier League finals showdown.

The green winning machine lines up against Rob Cross in the Semi-Finals at The O2 in London on Thursday night.

But MVG is already looking ahead to a potential clash with The Flying Scotsman - who takes on Michael Smith in the other semi - in what would be a sizzling final.

Van Gerwen, 30, admitted: "Always Gary is my biggest threat. As far as I'm concerned we are the best two players in the world. If you look at all the tournaments we've won, it shows that with the ability we have got.

"Of course, anyone can beat anyone on the day but Gary is the threat in my mind.

"Most of the important games I win over Gary so I also hope I can continue that good form against him.

“But you have to do that, he wants to win as well. He always tries that little bit extra against me and he doesn’t want to lose against me. So I have to make sure and do a bit extra.

“He beat me last week in Aberdeen but that means nothing now. To be fair there was nothing to play for, this week is totally different.

“I’m looking forward to it, there’s going to be four phenomenal players. Let the best man win.”

First up for Van Gerwen is a re-match of the sensational World Championship semi-final against Cross which he missed six darts to win and obviously Voltage went on to steal his world crown.

But the Dutchman is adamant he is not kept awake at night by those misses. He added:  “No I’m not haunted by the six missed darts. I think the two previous times I’ve played Rob in this Premier League already I showed everyone it’s not really bothering me.

“It’s a new tournament and I also think the form of myself is a little bit better than Rob’s.

“Of course I want to show people I am the No 1. But you also have to believe in that otherwise you are gone.

“You have to believe in the hunger. If you don’t have the hunger you cannot perform well.

“Winning gives me motivation, it’s the best motivation in the world. All the pleasure you get, all the compliments and lovely messages. That’s quite important for me always.

“I will not underestimate Rob obviously. You cannot do that with the World Champion, he’s a phenomenal player and he’s proved that.

“But it’s a new environment for him and new venue for him. This is now my sixth year and that’s a big difference in experience. I’m a little bit ahead of him and I need to make sure I stay ahead.

“It’s true that it’s hard to win it again on one night having won the league over 15 weeks. That is maybe not the best thing about the Premier League.

“I always think if you do a competition, the winner is actually the winner. But it’s not that way with this tournament, it’s different, it’s one more day.

“You have to perform and you need to make sure you are concentrated for this or they eat you up. You can’t take anything for granted.”
