Kim Huybrechts desperate to end his World Matchplay woes

Kim Huybrechts looks on

Kim Huybrechts is quietly confident he can end his Blackpool bogey in 2018 by recording a first ever win on the Winter Gardens stage.

Huybrechts has suffered First Round exits in all six of his previous BetVictor World Matchplay appearances, a record also held by Robert Thornton before he won at the seventh attempt against Josh Payne in 2016.

Belgian ace Huybrechts has slipped to 15th in the Order of Merit, but with no prize money to defend this week, has the opportunity to climb back in the right direction.

"The record isn't great but I've been thinking about it and I'd rather have been here seven times and lose in the First Round seven times than not be here at all," Huybrechts told Live Darts TV.

"You get ranking money and at the end of the day it's money to provide for your family so I think that's more important than to have a record.

"Obviously I want to win, it hasn't worked out so far here but we'll see this year."

Huybrechts has been drawn to face Scotland's John Henderson on Monday - another player who has typically struggled on the Blackpool stage, winning just one match (2011) in his three previous appearances.

Worryingly for 'The Hurricane', he has lost six of his last seven meetings with Henderson, though this will be their first in televised competition.

"There are 32 quality players in this, there's no easy draw and you have to play very well to beat them," he added.

"Even if you get the lower-ranked players you still have to play your best game, that's how high the level is.

"I'm not underestimating John at all, he's a quality player so I think it's going to be a good game."
