World Champion Rob Cross admits he will “come back stronger” after missing out on Unibet Premier League glory.

Voltage could not repeat his dramatic World Championship semi success over Michael van Gerwen, crashing 10-6 at the O2 last night.

The Hastings ace started slowly against the dynamic Dutchman and although he briefly fought back into the match, MVG was always in control.

Cross admitted: “I’d had a difficult lead up to the match with the sternum injury but I was totally fine for tonight, not affected by it at all.

“I just could pick up my performance, I was too flat and my first dart wasn’t strong enough. You can’t afford to be below par against Michael and he took his chances like you expect him to.

“I’ve learnt a lot in the Premier League, the travelling and commitments are a huge factor and that probably took its toll in the end. But I’ve gained that experience now and I will come back stronger that’s for sure.

“I definitely need a break and that’s what I’ll do with my family now. I won’t play again for a week or so, that family time is vital for me right now.

“I just want to get myself physically and mentally right for the World Cup. I’ll get over the disappointment of tonight with some quality downtime with my wife and kids. Then I’ll get back to work and fresh for the World Cup.

“It’s a huge honour to get a place in the England team and as captain. I’m so proud of that and I’m looking forward to playing in Frankfurt at the end of the month.

“But I need to be 100 per cent for it and that’s what I’ll be making sure of now. At this level now I’m learning it’s about stamina and producing at the right time.

“The great thing is that I’ve got the World Cup to focus on straight away. It will be a very proud time for me.”
