Dutch legend Raymond van Barneveld has called for PDC bosses to introduce a Ryder Cup style event to the calendar.

Van Barneveld and Michael van Gerwen sealed their fourth Betway World Cup win, defeating Scotland in the final in Frankfurt a fortnight ago.

But the five-time World Champion and former Players Championship Finals winner Paul Nicholson are both keen on adding a new type of international tournament to the calendar.

Van Barneveld said: "I suggested the Ryder Cup last year. Barry Hearn loves Golf so I think he would love this as well.

"Rotterdam is the perfect spot for the first edition. The winners get to pick next location."

Nicholson said: "I was asked on a few occasions last week during the World Cup of Darts, what about a Ryder Cup style match in darts?

"Well, I reckon a GB & Ireland team vs Rest of the world would be rather incredible. Legendary captains, vociferous atmospheres. What's not to get excited about?"

In the sport of golf, the current set-up of the Ryder Cup has been played since 1979. During the biennial tournament, the strongest American team will compete against the best players from Europe.

A team consists of twelve players; nine of them qualify through a ranking for the selection, while the team captain can also hand out three wildcards.

In pool there is a similar event on the calendar, the Mosconi Cup. This is an annual tournament with six Americans taking on six Europeans.

Sky Sports pundit Wayne Mardle is also calling for a slight tweak to the format.

He said: "I was looking at Twitter and social media and mulling over the format and talk of changes, looking for a better format than they have now. Keeping it pairs, maybe a best of nine, 11 or 13 in the second round.

"But pairing the very best against someone who could beat them in a slightly shorter format. I just think over the longer duration they would get beat.

"An upset in a best of singles is very possible and that sets up the pairs drama. If you go straight to pairs in a best of 13, I think we could see some heavy defeats.

"The format is fine and the only thing I could possibly tweak is the set-up in the final. They only play as a team once in what could be a tie of five matches.

"Perhaps kicking off the final with the pairs. They are all introduced together as a team and come on together so why not kick off a team event as a team."
