Wes Newton completes 2019 BDO World Championship line-up

Wes Newton will make his debut in the 2019 BDO World Championship at Lakeside after securing the final qualification place via the invitation table.

Newton, a former UK Open and European Championship finalist, joined the BDO in January alongside Andy Hamilton after ending last season outside of the top 64 in the PDC Order of Merit.

The 41-year-old has reached three BDO Semi-Finals this year but looked set to narrowly miss out on a place at Lakeside after Adam Smith-Neale won the World Masters to knock 'The Warrior' out of the standby spot.

However, with no Asian qualifying event taking place and therefore no Asian representative, Newton will take his place at Lakeside as the next listed player on the BDO Invitation table.

Former world finalist Hamilton secured his Lakeside debut at the first time of asking by winning through the play-off last month, and like Newton, will start out in the Preliminary Round.

Defending champion Glen Durrant, the number two seed, will be bidding to become the first player since Eric Bristow in 1986 to win three consecutive BDO world titles.

Top seed Mark McGeeney is out to go one better than his runner-up spot in 2018, while former champions Scott Mitchell and Scott Waites will also have their sights set on glory.

Lisa Ashton is the reigning and four-time Women's World Champion after defeating Anastasia Dobromyslova by three sets to one in the 2018 final.

The 2019 BDO World Championship takes place at the Lakeside complex in Frimley Green from January 5-13 and will be shown live on Eurosport and Quest.

Both men's and women's prize funds are still to be confirmed, while the draw is expected to be made in early December.
