Cross, whose Challenge Tour exploits in 2016 earned him a full Tour Card for this season, maintained the form which led him to be a seed at the recent UK Open by going the distance on a memorable day at the Barnsley Metrodome.

The Sussex star kick-started his run with a superb victory over recent tour event winner Alan Norris, before defeating Max Hopp and Richie Burnett to reach the Last 16.

There, he saw off Jamie Caven 6-4, before dispatching five-time World Champion Raymond van Barneveld by the same scoreline.

Cross then surpassed his run to the Semi-Finals of UK Open Qualifier 5 by edging out UK Open runner-up Gerwyn Price in a decider from 3-1 down to move through to the final.

The final proved a cagey affair as the duo traded early breaks of throw, and though Cross missed match darts in leg ten, he held firm to deny King in the decider and land the £10,000 top prize.

King's run to the final was his first since the 2014 European Grand Prix and saw him overcomes the likes of Brian Woods, Jeffrey de Graaf and ninth seed James Wade.

He followed that with two impressive performances, firstly in a 6-1 win over Martin Schindler and then a 6-2 victory over Ritchie Edhouse.

In the Semi-Finals, he faced Steve West - the man he defeated in the 2017 World Championship - and had to dig deep to secure a 6-5 win from 4-2 behind.

World number one Michael van Gerwen came unstuck against Ireland's William O’Connor in a shock Third Round exit, while two-time World Champion Gary Anderson was beaten by in-form Daryl Gurney and a resurgent Paul Nicholson stunned newly crowned UK Open Champion Peter Wright.

Kim Huybrechts also had a memorable day in Barnsley as he fired in a nine-dart finish in his opening match against Sven Groen before being put to the sword by Jamie Caven in the following round.
