The latest PDC rankings make interesting reading as the season heads into its' business end, with summer's showpiece event - the 2012 World Matchplay just around the corner.

One thing remains the same though, Phil Taylor continues to top the pile, but he may begin to look over his shoulder should he fail to defend titles he has claimed over the past two years.

The Power led the way by almost half a million pounds in 2010, but the rise of his former apprentice Adrian Lewis and his back-to-back world titles have seen that gap closed to within £90,000.

The 15-time World Champion lost £20,000 from his tally following his defeat in the recent UK Open final, but will no doubt take some beating at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool next month, a venue which he has thrived over the last decade.

A shock defeat in the first round of the World Championship this year looked to spell the beginning of the end for Raymond van Barneveld, but the Dutch sensation has found a second wind and has moved up two places to seventh.

He will need to maintain his resurgence and new-found relaxed mind-set if he is to remain in the top eight however, as he leads Andy Hamilton by just over £1,000.

James Wade and Gary Anderson cement their places in third and fourth respectively, while Wes Newton's rise continues as he occupies fifth spot courtesy of a matched consistency on both floor and stage.

Justin Pipe's dominance in ProTour events is reflected in his 12th place ranking and many feel it is a matter of time before 'The Force' is felt on big the TV stage.

The tussle for places in the elite top 16 is as competitive as ever, with six players within £10,000 of the all-important 16th spot, enabling players to qualify for major televised tournaments automatically as seeds.

Wolverhampton's Wayne Jones takes up 16th position, with former world number one Colin Lloyd out to regain his place among the world's elite after dropping out for the first time in a decade last month.

The resurgent Ronnie Baxter is also among the contenders, along with the likes of Mervyn King, Pie Man Andy Smith and hotshot Dave Chisnall.

Robert Thornton's sensational UK Open victory saw him leap 15 places to 23rd and the Thorn will be eyeing a return to the big time as he aims to secure World Matchplay qualification within the next month with a series of good runs in Players Championship events.

Holland's rapid young duo Michael van Gerwen and Jelle Klaasen remain on the periphery of the top 32, as Belgium's Kim Huybrechts continues to go from strength to strength in his first full year on the PDC circuit.

Dean Winstanley and Ted Hankey were the high profile newcomers to the PDC after leaving the BDO in January, but so far it is Yorkshireman Winstanley who has found his feet the quickest, surging to number 68 from scratch following impressive results on the ProTour and successive European Tour qualifications.

Winstanley looks set for his televised debut in the PDC in July's World Matchplay should be retain his place within the highest 16 non-seeded players on the ProTour order of merit, but for Hankey, the expectation and pressure carried by his villain reputation has yet to materialise as he struggles in 88th having failed to take any prize money from the UK Open.

Increasing emphasis continues to be placed on ProTour 'floor' events in which the big guns and stars in the making alike ply their trade in unglamorous places such as Crawley and Wigan in a bid to keep in the hunt for places in the showcase TV events, but ultimately it is success on the big stage which impacts the greatest on the relatively new ranking system.

Here is the latest PDC Order of Merit (top 100 only), correct at June 17 2012 following the Players Championships in Birmingham.
