The new-look major now features only the top 32 players from the European Order of Merit - with prize money counting only from the ten European Tour events over the course of 2016.

With only the top eight players seeded into the draw, a number of tasty ties are in the offing in the early rounds in the growing darting hotbed of Belgium.

Michael van Gerwen is eyeing a third consecutive European Championship title, having edged out Gary Anderson 11-10 in a classic final 12 months ago.

Van Gerwen, the number one seed, is bidding for an eighth televised title of the year and an eighth consecutive appearance in a PDC televised tournament final.

Only Phil Taylor (with four titles) has had more success in this event than MVG, though his last triumph came back in 2011.

Notable absentees from this year's event include 2013 champion Adrian Lewis and five-time World Champion Raymond van Barneveld, while Kim Huybrechts aims to delight his home crowd with a strong run.

Debutants include the likes of Chris Dobey, Steve West, James Wilson, Holland's Jermaine Wattimena and South Africa's Devon Petersen.

The £400,000 tournament runs from October 28-30 at the Ethias Arena in Hasselt, Belgium. First Round matches are to be contested over the best of 11 legs, Second Round and Quarter-Finals best of 19 and Semi-Finals and Final best of 21 legs.
