Michael van Gerwen continued his incredible dominance of the Dutch Masters by securing a fifth consecutive title in Zwolle on Sunday, denying Steve Lennon 8-5 in the final.

Van Gerwen, whose last defeat in the competition came in the 2013 Semi-Finals, stormed to his fourth European Tour triumph of 2018, ending Lennon's hopes of a first PDC ranking title.

The world number one had been far from at his vintage best throughout the weekend and notably rode his luck to survive three match darts from Daryl Gurney in the Semi-Finals.

However, he utilised his vast experience to maintain the winning formula and follow up last weekend's European Grand Prix success with further silverware on home soil.

"It's an amazing feeling to win in front of my home crowd," said Van Gerwen, who has won four out of five European Tour events in 2018.

"I didn't play my best game this weekend but I did enough good things in the right moments to win matches where I wasn't at my best.

"That gives me confidence going into the Premier League and for the rest of the year – I love winning and I want to keep the feeling going.

"Steve was brilliant this weekend, he got better as the game went on and he will be a better player for this experience."

Lennon, the world number 51, was appearing in his first senior PDC final and began brightly by taking the opening leg of the final.

Van Gerwen, though, then reeled off five legs on the spin to take command before the Irishman landed double 16 to stop the rot.

The duo then traded the next two legs before MVG hit double nine to move to the verge of victory at 7-3, but only for Lennon to hit double one and follow up with an 87 finish for an 11-darter to break and trail by two.

Van Gerwen, however, ensured there would be no fairy-tale comeback for the 24-year-old as he landed double ten to seal the victory.

Lennon, who received a bye in the Second Round following the withdrawal of Rob Cross, admitted: "I grew in confidence as the tournament went on.

"I was very nervous and at the start of the tournament I got a bit lucky.

"I have no shame in losing to the best player in the planet and now I have to use this weekend's performance as a springboard to bigger things this year."

Van Gerwen's campaign was in stark contrast to the European Grand Prix a week ago - where he recorded three consecutive averages in excess of 109 on the final day of action.

The Premier League champion managed just one ton-plus average (102.7) in the entire tournament - in a 6-2 win over Kyle Anderson in the Quarter-Finals - prior to which he had seen off Darren Webster 6-4 with an average of just 91.

He survived a major scare against Gurney in the Semi-Finals as he came from 6-2 down to edge a 7-6 triumph after 'Superchin' had missed three match darts in two separate legs.

Lennon began the day by edging out James Richardson 6-5 in a nervy encounter before seeing off Mensur Suljovic 6-3 with the aid of a magnificent 143 checkout in the final leg.

The Carlow ace then defeated Kim Huybrechts 7-5 in the Semi-Finals, closing out victory with a superb 119 checkout.

The European Tour returns from June 8-10 with the Gibraltar Darts Trophy.
