Michael van Gerwen is confident he can scale new heights by going unbeaten throughout the 2017 Premier League Darts season.

Van Gerwen is the current holder of all of the sport's major individual titles, including the Premier League, which he claimed for a second time courtesy of an 11-3 demolition of Phil Taylor in last year's final.

The reigning World Champion has also finished top of the table in each of his four previous Premier League campaigns and notably lost just one of his 18 matches last season.

Darts' man of the moment is unbeaten in PDC competition since last October and believes he can retain this title without losing a single match, a feat last achieved by Taylor in 2007.

"It would be absolutely phenomenal if I can do it and of course I'm going to try," Van Gerwen told live-darts.com.

"I think I've got it in me but it's going to be really tough because you need to concentrate week after week and the travelling can get a bit much sometimes.

"I feel good and I think I can do some extra damage this year.

"I want to win everything I play in but it's not always that easy."

Van Gerwen kicks off the new campaign fresh from retaining the Unibet Masters title in Milton Keynes last weekend - where he overcame Gary Anderson in a high quality final.

The box office duo will renew their rivalry in front of a sold-out Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle on Thursday in a clash which also signals a repeat of last month's World Championship final, won comfortably by MVG.

The Dutch sensation admits he has the psychological upper-hand over the Scot ahead of their latest tussle, but is expecting a potential backlash from the world number two.

"I think my form is slightly better than his at the moment but that could change," he added.

"Gary's a fantastic player, he's very talented and very driven. You always need to make sure you're ready when you play him, otherwise you're going to have trouble.

"We are the best two darts players in the world in my opinion, people want to see us for the guaranteed 180s and high scoring.

"I think I've got a bit of an advantage over him by beating him the last two times and to beat him in the first week of the Premier League would be a great start.

"It's going to be a huge game and I think everyone who bought tickets will be very happy."
