Phil Taylor came through a tense tussle with Peter Wright to reach round two of the World Grand Prix, but there was no such fortune for Gary Anderson, who went down 2-1 to Welshman Richie Burnett.

Taylor ended with a 102 average and a win for Paul Nicholson means the two will renew their rivalry on television in the last 16 on Friday.

The Power was pushed all the way by colourful Scot Wright, who took the opening set and was relentless on both doubles to start and finish.

But Taylor kept his cool to level up at 1-1 and ended the challenge of Wright with a sensational 164 checkout to take victory.

"Peter's set me up for the tournament because he really made me work hard there," said Taylor. "The standard is so high that anyone is capable of a shock but I really dug in and I'm glad I wasn't a victim," he added.

The big shock of the night saw Premier League champion Gary Anderson exit the competition at the hands of Richie Burnett.

Burnett, who snook in through the back door by winning the final Players Championship to qualify, came back from one set to nil and two legs down to defeat the Scot in Dublin.

Anderson took the opening three legs and blew two match darts, allowing Burnett back into game. The Welshman needed no second invitation and was clinical on his finishing doubles to wrap up a superb victory.

He will now face Denis Ovens on Friday for a place in the last 8, after the veteran thrower eased past Jamie Caven 2-0 in the night's opening game.

Elsewhere Simon Whitlock saw off a deflated Terry Jenkins, as Mark Hylton continued his rise on television with a 2-1 win over Mark Walsh.

Eight 180's were not enough for Dave Chisnall as he once again suffered a major blip on the finishing doubles and lost out 2-1 to fellow St.Helens resident Alan Tabern.

Another Welshman Mark Webster saw off the gritty Andy Hamilton 2-1 in what proved to be a tight encounter and Paul Nicholson confirmed his date with Phil Taylor in the next round after a 2-0 win over Ronnie Baxter in the final game of the night.

Action continues from Dublin at 7pm tonight as the second round gets underway, with Raymond van Barneveld and James Wade among the stars in action.
